In the joint work of Quoc-Nam Tran, the current manager of CASA, and Carl Van Geem, taking part in the CGAL project, we propose to negotiate those compromises judiciously. That means that, we will tackle the problems by a hybrid symbolic-numerical approach and develop algorithms which should fit those two main goals. By binding CASA and CGAL we want to exploit the particular advantages offered by each system. While CASA is well-suited for the Algebraic aspects, CGAL is specialized in the Geometric aspects. More precisely, the efficiency comes from numerical computation within CGAL, while the reliability comes from exact computation of CASA. We exchange data between the two systems, so that the NURBS of CGAL can be used with input data from CASA, and therewith produce some output which can go back to CASA.
A first application for NURBS is the joint work of Quoc-Nam Tran and Carl Van Geem. The problem, the ideas and some first results were presented at the Workshop on Geometric Computing (2 and 3 June '97).
